William Oldroyd

William Oldroyd is a British director and screenwriter. He has worked in theatre, opera and film. He was director-in-residence at the Young Vic in London and has collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Before directing feature films, he directed short films and stage productions, including contemporary adaptations of classic texts.
His first feature film was Lady Macbeth, written by Alice Birch and produced by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly. Presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016, the film stars Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis, Paul Hilton, Naomi Ackie and Christopher Fairbank. In 2023 he directed Eileen, based on the novel by Ottessa Moshfegh, starring Thomasin McKenzie, Anne Hathaway and Shea Whigham. His most recent work is the series His & Hers, adapted from the novel by Alice Feeney, for which Oldroyd is lead writer, executive producer and director of three episodes. The series, starring Tessa Thompson, was released on Netflix in January 2026.
