Her first book, White Teeth, which she wrote at only 25 years old, has immediately become an international case for the extraordinary richness of the characters, the high quality of the writing, the reflection on the conflicts between different cultures and traditions, and the skilful combination of autobiographic and universal themes. After the interesting and underestimated “The Autograph Man”, whose protagonist is a Jewish-Chinese who makes a living out of buying and selling autographs, she has sent off to print “On Beauty”, a new, exciting novel, which reiterates her attention for racial and cultural conflicts, and finds its dramatic inspiration in E.M. Forster’s books. The title was inspired by a poem by her husband, Nick Laird.
