Writer and essayist, he has been a member of the Académie Goncourt since 2020. He wrote an extensive number of essays, novels, and short tales throughout his lifetime. He grew close to the Nouveaux Philosophes movement in the 1970s. Philosophically, he is a proponent of the "reenchantment" idea, which holds that after a period of the world becoming disenchanted, there will be a reconciliation between the real and the magical. He has worked with many French and foreign publications, such as Le Monde and the Nouvel Observateur.
