Writer, editor, and literary critic, he has been the editor of the New York Review of Books until 2018. His work focused primarily on Asia, having lived in Japan for a long time, and human rights. He is a member of Human Rights in China, and lecturer for the European Council of Foreign Relations. He wrote for The Guardian, and several other international papers.
