Jeffrey Eugenides was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1960, of Greek and Irish extraction. After the degree at Brown University and an MA in English and Creative Writing from Stanford University, in 1986 he published his first short story Here Comes Wiston, Full of the Holy Spirit, that received the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowship. In 1993 his first novel, The Virgin Suicides, gained mainstream interest due to the 1999 film adaptation directed by Sofia Coppola and has since been translated into fifteen languages. His second novel, Middlesex (2002), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2003, and the Ambassador Book Award. In 2011 Eugenides published The Marriage Plot, finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. Since 2007 he has taught Creative Writing at the Princeton University. Jeffrey Eugenides lives in Princeton, with his wife, the photographer and sculptor Karen Yamauchi, and their daughter Georgia.
